How to get construction work in London with no experience

This guide covers how to get construction work in London with no experience: free CSCS card courses, where to sit the CITB test, and which contractors are hiring from Stratford to the City. It suits Londoners starting from scratch, people switching career, and qualified trades new to the capital.

Where London's building work is coming from

  • Refurbishment, not new towers. Deloitte's London Office Crane Survey 2026 put new office starts at about 4.8m sq ft in 2025, with refurbishments making up 66%. It also flags a possible supply gap from 2027 to 2030. Our read: much of central London's work happens inside existing buildings: strip-out, drylining, M&E and finishing.
  • Stratford, E15. Gamuda Land has appointed GRAHAM to build a £45m, 321-bed student scheme at 14 Marshgate Lane, between Stratford High Street and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Pudding Mill Lane DLR is about 100m away, and completion is aimed at the 2028/29 academic year (National Construction News).
  • A trades shortage City Hall wants to fix. City Hall quotes a CITB estimate that Greater London needs roughly 26,500 extra construction workers over five years. It names bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing and electrical installation as key gaps, plus retrofit and heat-pump skills (London City Hall, July 2026).
  • Housing, in a hard market. The same City Hall release says the draft London Plan points to up to 558,000 homes by 2037, while calling London "one of the most difficult development markets in recent memory". The 28 October 2026 Budget added £1.5bn for social and affordable homes in England (GOV.UK).

Borough and housing-association contracts often carry local-labour targets. When one is announced in your borough, ask the contractor's community or social value team how it recruits.

CSCS test centres in London

Pearson VUE lists four CITB test centres within about 10 miles of central London. Several training centres also run the test as CITB Internet Test Centres (ITCs).

The Earls Court row comes from CITB's Internet Test Centre map, which also lists Canary Wharf Learning Centre (E14 4AD) and South Thames College's Wandsworth campus (SW18 2PP). Getting the green card in London

Plenty of London sites won't let you through the turnstile without a card, even though CSCS says it isn't a legal requirement (CSCS FAQs). New labourers need three things:

  • A Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. The London free courses below include it (CSCS Labourer card).
  • A pass in the CITB Operatives test. It's £23.50 booked direct, with 50 questions in 45 minutes and a pass mark of 45 (CITB). Book online or on 0344 994 4488 (CITB booking).
  • The card itself, £36 in the My CSCS app. It's valid for two years, and renewing it needs an employer declaration (CSCS).

CSCS warns that some websites charge far more than the official £36 (CSCS). In London, check the free routes first.

Free construction courses in London

  • London Construction Academy (Earls Court Skills Centre, SW6 1TT). A free 15-day course for unemployed Londoners aged 18+, run Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4pm. It covers health and safety, brickwork and paving, and includes the CSCS Green Labourer card, free travel, lunches, mentoring and a graduation job fair (LCA).

The next LCA course runs from 16 November to 4 December 2026, and applications close on 7 November (LCA).

  • The Skills Centre (Places for London, TfL's property company). Free accredited training at hubs including Edgware (interiors and finishing), BuildEast (cladding, steel fixing and formwork), Bollo Lane and Earls Court, with a Lambeth brickwork hub planned (Places for London).
  • Mayor's Skills Bootcamps. Free courses of up to 16 weeks for Londoners aged 19+, with employer contact and interview support (London City Hall).

Each provider sets its own rules on borough, age and benefits.

Construction apprenticeships in London

City Hall's £88.6m construction skills package names New City College (construction) and South Bank Colleges (clean energy) as lead colleges, and includes £13.7m for industry placements (London City Hall). Ask either college how placements link to apprenticeship vacancies.

The LCA says past learners have gone on to apprenticeships, including one who joined FM Conway (LCA). For live vacancies, filter Find an apprenticeship by your borough. Anyone aged 16 to 21 can start a foundation apprenticeship, which is built for people with no experience (apprenticeships.gov.uk).

Landing your first London site job

  1. Pick a course with a job fair attached. Meeting a site manager face to face at the LCA or a Skills Centre hub beats cold CVs.
  2. Work out your 7am radius. Agencies will ask which zones you can reach before a 7am start, so know your night bus and first Tube options.
  3. Go to agencies ready. Take your card, right-to-work share code, two references and your own boots, hi-vis and hard hat.
  4. Ask how you'll be paid. Under CIS, contractors deduct 20% (30% if you aren't registered) (GOV.UK). Self-employed workers don't get holiday or sick pay (GOV.UK), so compare that with a PAYE offer.
  5. Search DWP's Find a Job (jobs.service.gov.uk) for smaller borough firms.

What construction workers earn in London

The National Careers Service gives £23,000 (starter) to £35,000 (experienced) a year for a construction labourer, on 40 to 44 hours a week (National Careers Service). That's a national figure. We couldn't find an official London-specific construction pay figure, so we don't quote one. Treat any agency day rate as an offer to compare, not a benchmark.
