1.Who we are
BuildingJobs (“we”, “us”) runs the website at building-jobs.co.uk. We list live jobs and upcoming projects across 17+ cities in the UK so that trades can find work today and see what is coming next.
We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy. If you have a question about how we handle your information, email hello@building-jobs.co.uk.
2.What information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details when you join: your name, email address and password. If you take a paid plan, your chosen city and billing details (see payments below).
- Job posts when you post a job: the job details, the public summary, the full description, any pay you give, and your name, company, email and phone number so members can contact you.
- Messages when you contact us: your name, email address and whatever you write.
- Preferences such as your trade, city and email settings, used for Top Picks and the daily email on Premium.
Information we collect automatically
- Usage information such as the pages you view, searches you run, the device and browser you use and your approximate location from your IP address.
- Postcode searches you enter to sort by distance. We use these to run the search; we do not store them against your account.
Information from public sources
Upcoming projects are compiled from public sources: council planning portals, procurement notices and company announcements. These records can include the names of applicants, agents and contacts that those sources have published. We show this information to members so they can approach the right people about the work. See public sources and listings for how to ask us to correct or remove a record.
3.How we use it and our legal bases
UK data protection law requires a legal basis for each use of personal information. Ours are set out below.
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Providing your account, search, saved preferences and membership | Performance of our contract with you |
| Publishing your job post and showing your contact details to members | Performance of our contract with you |
| Taking payment and managing subscriptions | Performance of our contract; legal obligation (accounting records) |
| Sending service emails such as receipts, security notices and changes to terms | Performance of our contract; legitimate interests |
| Sending Top Picks and the daily email on Premium | Performance of our contract; you can turn these off at any time |
| Compiling and publishing upcoming projects from public sources | Legitimate interests: helping trades find work and clients find trades |
| Checking job posts, preventing spam, fraud and misuse | Legitimate interests; legal obligation |
| Understanding how the site is used so we can improve it | Legitimate interests |
| Marketing emails about BuildingJobs | Consent, which you can withdraw at any time |
5.Public sources and listings
Upcoming projects are built from information that public bodies and companies have already published. We reproduce it so trades can find work before it goes out to tender, and we point members to the original source.
If a listing names you and you would like it corrected, updated or removed, email hello@building-jobs.co.uk with a link to the listing and what needs to change. We check against the source and reply within one working day. Where the information has been published by a public body under planning or procurement rules we may not be able to remove it entirely, but we will always correct it and explain what we have done.
Live jobs are posted by the people who need the work done. You can edit or close your own job at any time from your account, or by emailing us.
7.How long we keep it
- Account information for as long as you have an account, then for up to 12 months in case you come back or we need to resolve a dispute.
- Job posts while the job is open and for 12 months after it closes, so members who contacted you have a record of it. Contact details are removed from closed jobs after that period.
- Payment records for six years after the transaction, as required for UK tax and accounting.
- Messages to us for up to 24 months so we can follow up.
- Usage information in aggregated or anonymised form, which no longer identifies you.
8.Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your information, where there is no good reason for us to keep it;
- object to or restrict our use of your information, including for marketing;
- receive your information in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time, where consent is our legal basis.
To use any of these rights, email hello@building-jobs.co.uk. We will respond within one month. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, though we would appreciate the chance to help first.
9.Keeping it secure
The site is served over HTTPS, passwords are stored hashed, and access to personal information is limited to the people who need it to run the service. No system is perfectly secure, so if you believe your account has been compromised, change your password and tell us straight away.
10.Children
BuildingJobs is for people at work and is not directed at anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
11.Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our practices change and update the date at the top. If a change is significant we will tell account holders by email. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated policy. See also our terms of use.
