Bristol's building pipeline
- Hengrove Park, south Bristol. Work began in summer 2026 on the first major phase of a 1,435-home neighbourhood on the former Whitchurch airfield, about half of it affordable. Goram Homes (Bristol City Council's housing company) and Vistry are delivering Phase One: 209 homes, which may rise above 350 subject to planning, plus a 22-hectare park and a low-carbon energy centre. The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority has put in almost £20m (Goram Homes, July 2026).
- Temple Meads Southern Gateway. Kier won a £35m Bristol Temple Quarter contract for a multi-storey car park and cycle pavilion at the station's southern entrance, running from March 2026 to March 2028 (Punchline Gloucester, February 2026).
- Lockleaze, north Bristol. Goram Homes and Countryside Partnerships host a skills academy on their live One Lockleaze development (Goram Homes).
Our read: Bristol's pipeline leans towards big housing schemes, so bricklayers, groundworkers, roofers, plasterers, plumbers and labourers should see the most consistent demand.
Training on a live site: One Lockleaze
The One Lockleaze Skills Academy sits inside a working development, so you learn plastering, plumbing or brickwork on an actual house rather than a workshop bay. It runs a 10-day Level 1 BTEC leading to a CSCS card, and an 8-week Level 2 BTEC in options such as carpentry, plumbing, brickwork and painting and decorating, depending on demand. Courses are free for eligible adults aged 19+, and Goram Homes says priority currently goes to people who are unemployed or earning less than the minimum wage. Call Partners in Bristol on 0117 312 5777 to check (Goram Homes).
Partners in Bristol's 10-day course
This in-person course is certified by City & Guilds or Highfield and leads to the Green Labourer CSCS card. It covers hazards and risk, manual handling, working at height, health risks, and plant and machinery, plus employability skills, CITB test support and introductions to employers who are recruiting. It's fully funded, subject to eligibility (Partners in Bristol). Goram Homes notes that Partners in Bristol works alongside City of Bristol College (Goram Homes).

The card in brief
CSCS says contractors usually ask for a card even though no law requires one (CSCS FAQs). A Bristol beginner needs the Level 1 health and safety award (CSCS), a pass in the CITB Operatives test (£23.50, 45 out of 50 to pass) (CITB), and £36 for the card in the My CSCS app, which CSCS says usually processes applications within 48 hours (CSCS). The first card lasts two years. Both funded Bristol courses above cover the award, so you may not need to pay for it.
Apprenticeships in Bristol
- One Lockleaze's 8-week Level 2 BTEC is a practical step towards an apprenticeship if you're not ready for one yet (Goram Homes).
- Housebuilders on the big schemes. Vistry and Countryside Partnerships both build in Bristol, so check their careers pages for apprentice intakes.
- Official search. Use Find an apprenticeship for Bristol and the West of England. Foundation apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 to 21 with no experience (apprenticeships.gov.uk).
Starting out in Bristol with no experience
- Do a funded 10-day course. Both routes end with a Green card and employer contact.
- Read the site boards. At Hengrove Park, Lockleaze and Temple Meads, the boards show who holds the groundworks, brickwork and drylining packages. Ask those firms directly.
- Sign up with agencies covering Bristol and the M4/M5. Take your card, right-to-work share code, references and your own PPE.
- Know the pay basis. CIS subcontractors have 20% deducted (30% if unregistered) (GOV.UK) and get no holiday pay as self-employed (GOV.UK).
- Search DWP's Find a Job (jobs.service.gov.uk) for smaller builders.
Getting around Bristol's sites

The Pearson centre is out at Bristol Business Park, near Coldharbour Lane. Bristol traffic is slow at rush hour, so time the bus or bike ride before accepting a 7:30am start.
Earnings
The National Careers Service quotes £23,000 (starter) to £35,000 (experienced) a year for an England construction labourer working 40 to 44 hours a week (National Careers Service). We didn't find an official Bristol figure.
